Paper Abstract
Depression and anxiety are frequent in patients with thyroid disorders, including Graves’ disease. This cross-sectional study included 40 adults with Graves’ disease who underwent clinical evaluation, thyroid function assessment, and HADS screening for anxiety and depression. Anxiety scores were normal in 57.5% of patients, borderline in 15%, and abnormal in 27.5%, while depression scores were normal in 77.5%, borderline in 10%, and abnormal in 12.5%. No significant differences in HADS scores were found by sex, presence of orbitopathy, treatment regimen, or achievement of euthyroidism. However, female patients showed significant negative correlations between age and both anxiety and depression scores, as well as between age at disease onset and depression. These findings suggest that younger women with Graves’ disease may be more vulnerable to psychoemotional disturbances, underscoring the importance of routine mental health assessment.
